Glossary/White Lining

White Lining

Outlining the proposed excavation area in white paint or flags before submitting a one-call ticket, so responding utilities know exactly where to sweep instead of marking an entire frontage.

White is the APWA color reserved for proposed excavation. A white-lined dig area produces tighter, more usable marks because each responding locator can concentrate on the ground that matters, and several one-call programs require it for large or ambiguously described excavations. It costs a few minutes and it materially improves what comes back on the ticket.
