Gas Line Locating
The highest-stakes line on the property.
Gas line locating finds and marks buried natural gas and propane piping in APWA yellow before anyone digs. One-call covers the utility’s side up to the meter for free; the run past the meter to a house, shop, generator, or fire pit is the owner’s, and that is what private locating covers.
What gas line locating covers
A gas line is any buried pipe carrying natural gas or propane, and it is the one buried utility where a mistake during excavation can injure or kill people well beyond the person holding the shovel. On a typical property there are two distinct systems. The utility owns the distribution main in the street and, in most service territories, the service line running from that main to the meter, and it maintains and marks that portion. Everything downstream of the meter belongs to the property owner: the run to the house, and any line added later out to a detached garage, shop, barn, pool heater, standby generator, outdoor kitchen, or fire pit. Propane sites work the same way with the tank standing in for the meter, and the buried run from the tank onward is the owner’s. All of it is marked in APWA yellow, the code for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and gaseous materials, and none of the owner-side portion appears on a one-call ticket.
How gas lines get traced
Where the pipe is steel or copper, an electromagnetic locator works the way it does on any conductive line: a transmitter puts a signal on the pipe and the receiver traces the field radiating from it along the ground. Most modern gas pipe is not steel, so in practice the locator is tracing tracer wire, a copper or copper-clad conductor laid in the trench alongside the plastic pipe and brought up at a riser, meter, valve box, or cathodic test station so there is something to clamp onto. Locators generally avoid making a direct electrical connection to live gas piping, and instead clamp the tracer wire, couple inductively, or induce a signal from the surface. Ground penetrating radar covers what the electromagnetic side cannot reach, because a plastic line with no wire and no access point produces no traceable signal but can still appear as a reflection in the radar record when soil and depth cooperate. Where the line can be accessed and isolated, some companies also offer acoustic pipe locating, which puts a vibration into the pipe and follows it from the surface. Marks go down as yellow paint and flags with a tolerance zone, and on anything critical the position is confirmed by exposing the pipe with air or hydro vacuum excavation, which is the only step that turns an estimated depth into a measured one.
Why gas lines are hard to find
Plastic is the core problem, because most gas distribution and service pipe installed in recent decades is polyethylene, which is non-conductive, carries no signal, and is invisible to an electromagnetic locator on its own. The design answer is tracer wire, and tracer wire fails in every way a thin buried conductor can: never installed on older runs, severed by a later excavation, corroded at an unsealed splice, or intact but terminated underground with no access point anyone can reach. Owner-installed runs are the worst case, because a line trenched out to a shop or a fire pit by whoever was on site that week rarely has wire, rarely has an as-built drawing, and rarely has anyone left on the property who remembers the route. Radar is not a clean fallback either: gas services are small, commonly half an inch to two inches, which sits near the resolution limit at working depths, and GPR is badly degraded in wet clay and other high-conductivity soils where the signal attenuates within a foot or two of the surface. The corridor near the meter is also crowded, with water, electric, and communications sharing the same route, and because gas, water, and electrical grounds are frequently bonded together, a signal put on one of them bleeds onto the others and produces ghost traces and distorted depth readings. Cover depth is no help in narrowing it down, since regrading, landscaping, and paving over the years move the surface without moving the pipe.

Call one-call first
What one-call marks, and what it does not
Call 811 in the US, or your provincial one-call center in Canada, before any excavation. It is free, it is required by law before digging in most jurisdictions, and it is the step that brings the gas operator out to locate and mark the facilities it owns. What the operator marks is the distribution main and, in most service territories, the service line up to the meter; ownership of that service lateral varies by utility and jurisdiction, so ask where their responsibility ends rather than assuming it reaches your building. Past the meter, one-call marks nothing, and the run to the house, garage, shop, generator, pool heater, or fire pit is the property owner’s, as is the entire buried run from a propane tank, which usually has no one-call member behind it at all. Private locating is what covers that side of the meter, so place the one-call ticket first and hire a locating company for the rest; the two are complements, and neither replaces the other.

Gas Line Locating FAQ
Does 811 mark gas lines on private property?
Only the portion the gas operator owns. A one-call ticket is free and is required by law before excavation in most jurisdictions, and it brings the operator out to mark its distribution main and, in most service territories, the service line running to your meter. It stops there. The run from the meter to the house, and anything added later to a garage, shop, generator, pool heater, or fire pit, is yours, appears on no one-call map, and is exactly what private locating is for. A buried propane line from a yard tank is private end to end. Place the one-call ticket first, then hire a locating company for the rest of the site.
Can a plastic gas line be located?
Usually, but not by pointing an instrument at the plastic itself. Polyethylene gas pipe is non-conductive, so an electromagnetic locator traces the tracer wire buried alongside it, which means the locate depends on that wire existing, being continuous, and having an accessible point at a riser, meter, valve box, or test station. Where there is no usable wire, the locator falls back to ground penetrating radar, which can image the pipe when soil conditions allow but degrades badly in wet clay, and to acoustic pipe locating where the line can be accessed. Say up front whether the run is plastic and whether tracer wire was installed, because it changes the equipment the service provider brings and what they can honestly promise. If nothing produces a confident trace, the right answer is to expose the line with vacuum excavation rather than dig on an assumption.
I think I smell gas. Should I schedule a locate?
No. A suspected gas leak is an emergency, not a scheduling problem. Leave the area on foot immediately and take everyone with you, and do not light anything, operate switches or garage doors, use a phone, or start a vehicle while you are still near the smell. From a safe distance, call 911 and your gas utility’s emergency number; gas utilities respond to reported leaks around the clock. Treat a hissing or roaring sound near a gas line, bubbling in standing water, and a patch of dead or dying vegetation over the run the same way. Locating and leak pinpointing happen after the line has been made safe, never before.
How much does gas line locating cost?
It is quoted per job rather than off a rate card, because the work scales with the size of the site, how many runs are in play, whether there is usable tracer wire to clamp onto, and whether you need surface marks only or a drawing, GPS data, and potholes that verify depth.
