Laterals, tanks, and drain fields with no map.
Sewer and septic locating finds the lateral running from a building out to the main or the tank, along with the septic tank, distribution box, and leach field. These lines are nearly always privately owned, rarely documented, and outside the scope of a one-call ticket in most jurisdictions.
What sewer and septic locating covers
The sewer side of a property is everything that carries waste away from the building: the building sewer or lateral leaving the foundation, the cleanouts along it, the tap where it meets the municipal main, and on commercial sites the grease interceptor, the ejector or lift pump and its pressurized force main, and the storm, area, and roof drains that run on their own separate network. On an unsewered property the same lateral runs instead to a septic tank, out of the tank to a distribution box, and from there into the leach or drain field, a set of perforated laterals bedded in gravel trenches that can occupy a large part of a yard. Materials span a century of plumbing practice: vitrified clay tile, cast iron, concrete, Orangeburg bituminous fiber, and more recently ABS, PVC, and HDPE. Almost all of it is owned by the property owner rather than by a utility, which means nobody has an obligation to map it, and on most residential and older commercial sites nobody has. Finding it matters because a gravity sewer sits at a fixed elevation it cannot be moved off, so a footing, a pier, a pool, a driveway, or a new addition placed over the lateral becomes an expensive problem long after the crew has left.
How sewer lines get traced
The standard method is a sonde, a small battery-powered transmitter carried on a CCTV camera head or a push rod, fed into the line through a cleanout and driven along it while a receiver above ground follows the field it radiates. In North America these commonly run at 512 Hz, which passes through soil and pavement well, and the receiver both pinpoints the sonde and reads a depth to it at each discrete point where the camera is parked, so the route is built up as a series of marked stations rather than as one continuous trace. Doing it with a camera is what makes the pairing so natural: the same pass that establishes position and depth also records the pipe material, the joints, the root intrusion, the bellies, and the offset or collapse that prompted the call. Metallic pipe is sometimes traceable directly with an electromagnetic transmitter connected at a cleanout or a cast iron stack, and where the run is short and the pipe empty a conductive duct rod can be pushed in and energized in place of a sonde. Where there is no access at all, ground penetrating radar is the fallback: it reads the pipe and the disturbed trench backfill as reflections rather than tracing a signal, and it is also the primary tool for septic tanks, alongside a soil probe worked in a grid off the line leaving the house and a metal detector picking up steel lids, lid handles, or rebar in a concrete top. Everything found goes down in green paint and flags under the APWA Uniform Color Code, with a sketch carrying measured offsets to permanent features so the marks can be re-established after rain, mowing, or traffic. Before any of this, it is worth pulling the septic permit from the county or health department, since the original file often contains a sketch that narrows the search area considerably.
Why sewer lines are hard to find
Sewer resists every method that works on the rest of the site. Vitrified clay, concrete, Orangeburg, ABS, and PVC are all non-conductive, so there is nothing for an electromagnetic locator to energize, and gravity sewer is essentially never installed with a tracer wire, unlike pressurized plastic water and gas mains where a wire is now common practice. That leaves access as the real constraint, because a sonde has to physically get inside the pipe: plenty of older houses have no exterior cleanout at all, which forces entry through a pulled toilet or a roof vent stack, and a line already choked with roots, offset at a joint, holding water in a belly, or collapsed will stop the camera short so that only the reachable portion gets marked while the rest stays unknown. Records are no help either, since the lateral was installed by whoever built the structure, is owned by the property owner, and appears on no utility map, and it frequently does not run where people assume, angling instead toward an alley main, a neighboring easement, or a tap well off the centerline of the house. Depth compounds the problem, because a gravity line has to fall continuously and is usually shallow at the foundation but progressively deeper toward the main or the tank, and sonde range along with GPR penetration both drop off in the wet clay and other high-conductivity soils where sewer trenches most often sit. Reinforced concrete, rebar mesh, metal decking, and parked vehicles distort the sonde field and pull the surface pinpoint off the true position, and where a lateral shares a trench with the water service or runs parallel to a storm drain, the radar signature alone will not tell you which pipe is which. Abandoned laterals from a previous structure, an old septic tank left in the ground when the property was connected to the sewer, and dry wells or cesspools that predate any permit are all common and all invisible until something drives into one.

Call one-call first
What one-call marks, and what it does not
Always call 811 in the US or your provincial one-call center in Canada before you dig. It is free, it is required by law before excavation in most jurisdictions, and it notifies the member facility owners so they can mark the public lines they own. For wastewater, that generally means the municipal sewer main in the street or the right-of-way, and only where the sewer authority participates in the one-call program, which is not universal. The lateral connecting your building to that main is a different matter: in most places it is the property owner’s responsibility, often all the way to the tap under the street, and it is excluded from one-call scope, so a ticket that comes back clear across your yard is not evidence that no sewer line is there. A septic tank, distribution box, and leach field are private by definition and no one-call program locates them. The correct sequence is to file the ticket first, then hire a private locating company to find everything on your side of the tap, and to hand-dig or vacuum excavate within the tolerance zone of any mark from either source.

Does 811 locate sewer lines and septic tanks?
Generally not the ones on your property. How do you find a septic tank when there are no records?

Can a clay or PVC sewer line be located without digging it up?
Usually, but it depends on access. Clay, concrete, and plastic pipe are non-conductive and gravity sewer is essentially never installed with a tracer wire, so an electromagnetic locator has nothing to trace. The working method is to get a sonde inside the pipe on a camera or push rod through a cleanout, a pulled toilet, or a vent stack, and track it from the surface. If the line is collapsed, offset, or blocked by roots, the camera stops there and only the reachable portion can be marked, and where there is no entry point at all the locator falls back to ground penetrating radar, which is less certain and is badly degraded in wet clay.
