What irrigation line locating covers

An irrigation system is a private water distribution network that begins at a point of connection, most often a tee off the potable service downstream of the meter with a backflow preventer, and sometimes a well, a pond, a canal turnout, or a reclaimed water tap. From there a pressurized mainline runs to valve boxes holding electric solenoid valves, and each valve opens a lateral feeding a zone of rotors, spray heads, bubblers, or drip tubing that only carries pressure while that zone is running. Alongside the pipe, in the same trench, runs the control wiring: a common conductor plus one station conductor per valve on a conventional system, or a two-wire path with a decoder at each valve on larger commercial and golf installations. The same basic layout scales from a residential lawn to a school field, a municipal park, a golf course with miles of mainline, and a farm running subsurface drip or supply lines to a pivot. In cold climates the system is winterized by compressed-air blowout or drain valves rather than buried below frost depth, so irrigation commonly sits shallower than the potable service beside it. All of it belongs to the property owner, all of it sits past the meter, and almost none of it was ever drawn.

How irrigation lines get traced

The pipe itself gives an electromagnetic locator nothing to work with, so the practical entry point is the valve wire. A transmitter is connected at the controller to a station conductor and the common, which completes a circuit through the solenoid coil at the far end, and the receiver follows that current along the ground until it converges on the valve. Where the wire is open, meaning a cut station leg or a broken common, the transmitter is instead connected to the conductor with an earth return through a ground stake, and the trace runs cleanly up to the break and stops, which is itself the answer to a different question. Because installers normally pull the wire in the same trench as the mainline and tie it to the pipe, tracing the wire usually traces the pipe, and that is the single most productive assumption in irrigation locating, worth confirming with a pothole rather than trusting outright. Dedicated valve locators run on the same circuit but are tuned to read the field concentrated at the solenoid coil, which is what lets them pinpoint a valve buried under turf, mulch, or an asphalt overlay with no box lid showing. Where no usable wire path exists, the fallbacks are ground penetrating radar reading the pipe and its disturbed trench backfill, a sonde pushed through a line that has been isolated and drained, and charging or cycling a zone so an acoustic locator or ground microphone can follow the water column. Everything found goes down as purple paint and flags under the APWA Uniform Color Code, backed by a sketch with measured offsets to permanent features, and on courses, campuses, and municipal sites the same data is normally captured with GPS so the system finally has a record that survives the next mowing.

Why irrigation lines are hard to find

Irrigation is the least conductive utility on a typical site. Mainlines and laterals are Schedule 40 or Class 200 PVC, or polyethylene pipe in cold climates and on farms, and drip zones are polyethylene tubing, none of which carries current, and irrigation pipe is essentially never installed with tracer wire because the trade never adopted the practice that pressurized plastic water and gas mains eventually did. What rescues most jobs is the valve wire, and the wire fails in specific ways: a severed common takes out every zone downstream of it and the trace along with them, splices made with wire nuts and dropped loose in a valve box corrode within a few seasons, expansion coils left at each valve read as a knot of signal rather than a point, and installers sometimes route wire along a line the pipe does not follow when it was easier that day. Some systems offer no useful wire at all, since older golf and large turf systems use hydraulic valve control through small non-conductive tubing, two-wire decoder systems put a single continuous loop through the site that does not correspond zone by zone to the piping, and subsurface drip on farmland is unwired plastic shanked in at shallow depth across acres. Ground penetrating radar is a genuine fallback and a limited one here, because irrigation laterals are commonly three quarters of an inch to two inches, which is at or below the practical resolution limit of the antennas normally used for utility work, turf couples an antenna far worse than pavement does, and the ground over an irrigation system is by definition kept wet, which is exactly the condition where clay and other high-conductivity soils attenuate the signal within the first foot or two. Records rarely make up the difference, since systems are installed by landscapers, extended by different crews over decades, partially abandoned when a bed is redesigned or a building goes in, and handed to each new owner as a controller on a garage wall and nothing else. The consequences are lower than gas or electric but they are not trivial, because a cut mainline can run unnoticed between cycles until it shows up as a soft spot or a water bill, a severed common wire turns a small repair into a hunt across the whole property, and the excavation to fix either one is dug through the landscaping the system was installed to protect.

What one-call marks, and what it does not

Call 811 in the US, or your provincial one-call center in Canada, before you dig, even though irrigation is not what they are coming to mark. It is free, it is required by law before excavation in most jurisdictions, and it is what gets the gas, electric, and communications lines in the same yard marked before a trencher, an auger, or a pipe puller goes into the ground for sprinkler work. What one-call does not cover is the irrigation system itself, because it sits entirely downstream of the meter or the backflow preventer, it belongs to the property owner, and no member utility owns, maps, or marks any part of it. Two edges are worth knowing: a municipal reclaimed water main in the street or right-of-way is a public facility and will normally be marked purple by its owner, and in parts of the western US and the Prairies an irrigation district’s canals and buried supply lines may be a one-call member or carry a separate notification requirement of their own, so the district is worth calling directly. Everything on your side of that point, meaning the mainline, the valves, the laterals, the drip, and the control wire, is what a private locating company is hired to find, and the two services are meant to be used together.

Does 811 mark sprinkler and irrigation lines?

No, and that is not a knock on the program. A one-call ticket notifies the member facility owners so they can mark the public lines they own, which for water means the distribution main and usually the service up to the meter. Irrigation sits entirely past the meter or backflow preventer, is owned by the property owner, and appears on no one-call map, so a ticket that comes back clear across a lawn tells you nothing about where the sprinkler mainline runs. Call 811 or your provincial one-call center anyway, before every dig, because it is free, it is required by law in most jurisdictions, and it is what gets the gas, electric, and communications lines in the same yard marked before you trench for sprinkler work. How do you locate PVC sprinkler pipe when there is no tracer wire?

Through the valve wire, in most cases. PVC and poly carry no current, but the solenoid control wiring runs in the same trench and is conductive, so a transmitter connected at the controller to a station conductor and the common energizes a circuit through the valve coil, and the receiver traces it along the ground. That is an inference rather than a direct trace of the pipe, since the wire follows the mainline only as far as the installer kept them together, which is why anything critical still gets verified by exposing the line. Where there is no usable wire, the options narrow to ground penetrating radar, a sonde pushed through a line that has been isolated and drained, or charging a zone and following the water column acoustically, and each has real limits: small-diameter laterals sit near the resolution limit of common utility antennas, wet clay and constantly irrigated turf attenuate radar badly, and acoustic tracing on low-pressure plastic is weak to begin with. A locator will usually try more than one and should tell you plainly which runs are confirmed and which are best-guess.

Can you find a valve box that has been paved or sodded over?

Usually yes, and it is one of the most common irrigation calls. A valve locator puts a signal on the station conductor and common at the controller, current flows through the solenoid coil at the valve, and the coil concentrates the field enough that the receiver reads a distinct peak directly over it, through turf, mulch, sod, or a thin asphalt or concrete overlay. Metal detectors help only when a box has a steel lid or a marker was left behind, and most irrigation boxes are plastic. The method depends on an intact circuit, so a cut common, a corroded splice, or a burned-out solenoid can leave a valve unfindable this way, and two-wire decoder systems and older hydraulically controlled golf valves do not respond to the same technique at all. In those cases the locator falls back to tracing the mainline and probing along it, or to ground penetrating radar looking for the box itself as a void.

How much does irrigation line locating cost?

It is quoted per job rather than off a rate card, because the work scales with the size of the property, how many zones and valves are in play, whether the controller and wiring are accessible and intact, and whether you need surface marks only or a drawing and GPS data you can keep.
