Why locating matters for oil & gas
One-call covers the transmission and distribution assets a member facility owner registers. It does not cover the gathering lines, flowlines, produced-water runs, plant piping, cathodic protection leads, or instrument and power cable that fill a lease or a facility yard — those belong to the operator, and most of them predate the drawings anyone can find. A private locator traces what is actually there, tracks tracer wire on non-metallic runs, and reports depth of cover along the routes a bore or a trench has to cross, so the dig plan is built on the ground rather than on an as-built nobody trusts.

Frequently asked questions
Does the one-call ticket cover a lease or a plant yard?
Rarely, and not in the way people assume. One-call notifies the registered member facility owners, and each marks the lines it owns. On operator-controlled property the operator generally owns everything inside the fence, so the ticket comes back with little or nothing marked while the yard is full of buried pipe and cable. That gap is what private locating fills. Call the one-call center anyway before every dig — it is free and it is required by law — then hire a locator for the rest.
Can a locator find non-metallic gathering or flowline?
Only through something that carries a signal or shows a reflection. If the installer laid tracer wire and it is continuous and accessible, an electromagnetic locator traces it directly. If the line is open at one end, a sonde can be pushed through it and tracked from the surface. Failing both, GPR may image it as a reflection, though wet clay and saline ground cut radar depth hard. A locator who tells you a plastic run with no tracer wire and no access point may simply not be findable is being straight with you.
How accurate is the depth a locator reports?
Horizontal position on a well-coupled line is generally reliable and is marked with a tolerance zone rather than as a single line. Depth is an estimate derived from the shape of the field, and it degrades where lines run parallel, where cathodic protection and grounding have bonded systems together, and where the signal has coupled onto neighbouring steel. ASCE 38-22 classes that as Quality Level B. The only way to get a measured depth is to expose the line with a vacuum test hole, which is Quality Level A.
