A greenfield solar site looks empty and is not. Drain tile runs in patterns nobody recorded, irrigation mains and laterals cross the whole parcel, and there are private power and water services to old wells, pumps, and outbuildings. None of it belongs to a one-call member, so none of it gets marked. Damage to drain tile in particular is expensive twice over: the repair, and the neighbour relationship when a field floods. Locating on these sites is mostly GPR and sonde work, because most of what is there is plastic, clay tile, or concrete.

Frequently asked questions
Does 811 mark drain tile or irrigation?
No. One-call notifies member facility owners, and farm drainage and private irrigation belong to the landowner, not to a utility. They appear on no one-call map and usually on no map at all. On agricultural sites this is the single largest category of buried infrastructure and the most common thing damaged during construction, which is why a private sweep is standard practice before pile driving or trenching starts.
How well does GPR work on farmland?
It depends almost entirely on the soil. Sandy and well-drained ground gives good depth and clean reflections. Wet clay and other high-conductivity soils attenuate the signal within a foot or two of the surface, and saturated fill or saline ground cuts it further. A locating company that has worked your county will tell you what to expect before mobilizing. Where radar is weak, tile and irrigation are chased by sonde through accessible ends and by tracing tracer wire where an installer left any.
Should we get marks or a map?
On a site measured in hundreds of acres, a map. Paint on open ground does not survive weather, equipment traffic, or the months between the sweep and the work, and there is no practical way to re-find a mark in the middle of a field. Capturing the sweep as coordinates gives the EPC something that can be re-staked from survey control and handed to the operations team when the project is energized.
