Depth read in passive power mode is the least reliable of all, because the field is distorted by the return path and by nearby energized equipment. ASCE 38-22 classes this kind of surface geophysics as Quality Level B; only exposing the conductor, normally by vacuum excavation, reaches Quality Level A. Hand dig or vacuum excavate inside the tolerance zone no matter how clean the marks look.
