What Line Marking is

Line marking is the point where instrument readings become something a crew can dig to. A locator traces each line with electromagnetic equipment, ground penetrating radar, or both, then puts that traced route on the surface using the APWA Uniform Color Code so the marks are readable by anyone on site regardless of who placed them. A complete set of marks records the horizontal route, the utility type by color, and usually the facility identifier, duct or conduit count, line size, and an estimated depth written beside the route. Under ASCE 38-22, designating a line on the surface from geophysical data is Quality Level B; Quality Level A requires physically exposing the line and measuring it. Marking is normally bundled into a private utility locating visit rather than sold on its own, but it is the part of the job the excavation crew actually sees and relies on.

How it works

After tracing, the locator sprays inverted water-based marking paint along the route as a dashed line, adds wire-staff flags or stakes in turf and gravel where paint will not hold, and writes the owner or facility identifier next to the marks. The APWA Uniform Color Code assigns red to electric power lines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables; yellow to gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and other gaseous or flammable material; orange to communication, alarm, and signal lines, cables, and conduit; blue to potable water; green to sewers and drain lines; purple to reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines; pink to temporary survey markings; and white to the proposed excavation. Where paint is not permitted or the line runs beneath a structure, the locator sets an offset mark and writes the offset distance and direction beside it so the crew can measure back to the true route. Depth notes, duct counts, and sizes are written in the same color as the utility they describe, which keeps a congested corridor legible. Good practice is to photograph the finished marks and, on larger sites, capture them with GPS or a total station before they are disturbed, because paint is a perishable record and a coordinate is not.

When to choose Line Marking

Line marking is what you want any time equipment will be working on ground you have no reliable map for: excavation on private property past the meter, boring and directional drilling, post and foundation holes, landscaping and irrigation work, and any dig inside a plant, campus, or fenced facility that one-call locators do not enter. White lining, marking the proposed excavation in white before the one-call ticket is filed, narrows the area the public locator has to cover and generally produces cleaner, faster public marks. On long or phased projects, budget for re-marks rather than a single visit, since marks do not last as long as construction schedules. If you need positions that survive the dig, pair marking with utility mapping so the same data lives in a drawing or GIS layer instead of only on the dirt.

What Marking cannot do

A mark is only as good as the locate behind it, and paint carries no confidence rating: a line traced through a solid direct connection and a line inferred from a weak inductive sweep produce marks that look identical on the ground. Depth annotations are estimates derived from signal geometry or radar response, and they are degraded by soil moisture, nearby metal, poor coupling, and lines that run at an angle or bundle together; they are not survey grade and should not be used for design. Non-conductive lines with no tracer wire, including PVC irrigation, plastic water services, and many clay or plastic sewer laterals, may not be traceable at all, so unmarked ground is never proof of empty ground. Marks also degrade fast: paint on turf can disappear within days once mowing and irrigation resume, paint on pavement fades under traffic, street sweeping, UV, and rain, and flags are pulled out by property owners, wind, and landscapers. The excavation itself destroys the marks the moment topsoil is stripped, which is why offsets, hubs, or a mapped record matter on multi-day work. In congested corridors, parallel and bundled lines are often marked as a single band rather than as individual conduits, and private marking never substitutes for a one-call ticket on public facilities.

What do the utility marking colors mean?

They follow the APWA Uniform Color Code. Red is electric power, cables, conduit, and lighting; yellow is gas, oil, steam, and petroleum; orange is communication, alarm, and signal lines; blue is potable water; green is sewer and drain lines; purple is reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines; pink is temporary survey markings; and white is the proposed excavation. Individual one-call programs sometimes layer local conventions on top of the base code, so confirm marking requirements with the one-call center for your state or province.

Does private line marking replace calling 811?

No, and it is not meant to. Call 811 in the US, or your provincial one-call center in Canada, before every dig: it is free, it is required by law in most jurisdictions, and it gets the public facility owners to mark their lines up to the meter. Private line marking covers what one-call does not reach, meaning everything on your side of the meter plus lines the member utilities do not own or map, such as site lighting, irrigation, private gas runs, campus loops, and abandoned services. The two sets of marks use the same APWA colors on the same site and are meant to be read together.

How long do utility marks last, and when do they need refreshing?

There is no fixed lifespan. Paint on turf often disappears within days once mowing and irrigation resume, paint on pavement fades over weeks under traffic, sweeping, UV, and rain, and flags get pulled, mowed, or blown out. One-call tickets also carry a statutory life that varies by state and province, so public marks have to be refreshed by requesting a re-mark before the ticket expires. On phased or long-duration work, plan on the locating company returning to re-mark rather than trusting old paint, and photograph or survey the marks while they are still fresh.

Do the marks tell me how deep the line is?

Marks show the horizontal route at the surface, not a verified depth. Any depth written on the ground is an instrument estimate that can be thrown off by soil conditions, adjacent metal, and how the line is oriented, so treat it as a planning number and expose the line with vacuum potholing when you need the real one. Marks also represent a tolerance zone rather than a hairline: many US states define it as the width of the facility plus 18 inches on each side, Canadian jurisdictions commonly use a set metric distance, and most require hand digging or vacuum excavation inside that zone. Confirm the exact rule with your state or provincial one-call center before breaking ground.
