All-dielectric fiber contains no metal, so an electromagnetic locator has nothing to put a signal on and cannot trace the cable itself under any settings. Horizontal position from a clean active trace is generally reliable and is marked as a tolerance zone rather than a single line, but depth is an estimate, and it is worse on shallow targets and on ducts sharing a bank with other elements. ASCE 38-22 classes surface geophysics as Quality Level B; only exposing the duct, normally by vacuum excavation, reaches Quality Level A. Hand dig or vacuum excavate inside the tolerance zone regardless of how clean the orange paint looks.
