That ticket is free, it is required by law before excavation in most jurisdictions, and its members mark the public lines they own, which generally stops at the meter, the curb stop, or the property line. Questions
Water Line Locating in Florida FAQ
Can a plastic water line be located if there is no tracer wire?
Often yes, but not with an electromagnetic locator alone, because PEX, HDPE, and PVC carry no signal. The realistic options are a sonde pushed through the line, which normally requires an access point and an isolated, drained pipe, acoustic pipe locating that couples a signal into the water column at a hose bib or valve and is tracked with a ground microphone, or ground penetrating radar reading the pipe and its trench backfill. Each has conditions where it fails: acoustic range collapses in traffic noise and loose soil, and GPR is badly degraded in wet clay and other high-conductivity ground. A locator will usually try more than one and tell you honestly if the line cannot be confirmed, in which case vacuum potholing at a known point is the way to establish it.
Can locating tell me whether my service line is lead or galvanized?
Not from the surface. Locating tells you where the pipe runs and roughly how deep, not what it is made of, and an electromagnetic trace on a metallic service does not distinguish lead from galvanized steel from copper. The way material gets confirmed is by exposing the pipe at the curb stop, the meter, or the point of entry, which is normally done with vacuum excavation because it does not damage a soft old service. That is the same work water systems use when verifying entries in the service line material inventories required under the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, and it is worth asking for on the same visit if you already have someone on site.
How much does Water Line Locating cost in Florida?
Private locating is quoted per job rather than off a published rate. What moves the number is how much ground has to be covered, how many utilities are in play, whether the lines are metallic or plastic, how reachable the meters, valves, and tracer wire access points are, and whether you need surface marks only or a drawing and GPS data as well. Across Florida the number also moves with travel distance and local ground conditions, so companies quote the specific job. Describe it once through Utility Hotline and locating companies working that part of Florida send you their own quotes.
Does Sunshine 811 cover water lines in Florida?
Only on the public side. Sunshine 811 (811) is free, is required by law before excavation in most jurisdictions, and notifies its member facility owners so they mark the lines they own, which generally means up to the meter or the right-of-way. Membership is not universal, so how much of a service lateral gets marked can vary from one system to the next. Nothing on the private side, meaning past the meter or the property line, is in scope anywhere in Florida, and that is the ground a private locating company covers. Place the ticket, book the private locate, and use both.
Where in Florida can I get Water Line Locating?
Coverage is settled one request at a time rather than off a published service-area map. Water Line Locating requests arrive from cities across Florida, spanning the Southeast, and go to the companies working that particular ground, since water lines are routine work for a private locating company. Coverage runs deeper around the larger metros, and some crews travel for rural, agricultural, and multi-site work. Tell us the job site and we send your request to the companies covering it.
