Can Ground Penetrating Radar find plastic pipe?
Yes, and that is the main reason it gets booked. GPR responds to a contrast in material properties rather than to metal, so PVC, HDPE, clay tile, and concrete pipe can all reflect the pulse where an electromagnetic locator has nothing to trace. How deep can GPR see?
There is no fixed number, because depth is set by the soil and the antenna together. In dry sand, gravel, or granular fill a common utility-frequency antenna may reach roughly eight to ten feet; in wet clay or salty ground the same antenna can return nothing useful past two feet. Lower frequencies penetrate deeper but resolve small targets less well, so the locator matches the antenna to the depth and size of what you are after, and should tell you on site when the ground is not cooperating.
